This latest episode pops off with a little diddy I produced for a b-side song on Breez Evahflowin’s “Ageless” single, from his album As He Goes On. Feeling that it was a track that needed more exposure, I quickly made it the lead single on my free compilation release Hit The Dutchman. The full song features the lyrical talents of Roc Doogie, Breez, myself, and Core Rhythm, along with Pauley Ethnic on the hook. Next up is a banger from DJ Premier, the beat to “Fine By Me ft. MC Eiht”, which they just release as a single. This song is part of the Year Round Records compilation, Get Used To Us, which features an onslaught of Preemo production and talented MC features. Taking us home is the one and only Madlib, with his remix for “The Woman Behind Me”, by Percee P. This is one of 12 Madlib and Percee P remixes available on Perserverance (The Madlib Remix). You shouldn’t have to be reminded to support these artists by purchasing their music, but I can’t stress it enough. If you don’t support the music you love monetarily, the music you love will eventually fade away. Artists need money to pay the rent and feed their kids, and pay their bills, just like everybody else. It’s hard to follow a series of DJ Premier beats, but have confidence that this episode does not fall short by any means. First up is a classy banger from producer Ammbush. It’s called “MC Ambition”, and it’s part of Drums & Ammo Vol 1. Drums & Ammo is a four-man production team that also includes 6Fingers, REL & Al Jieh. Make sure you grab this free download and then support them by spreading the word. Next up is another crispy smanger from Brooklyn’s own, Willie Green. This one is off his new free release Four Seasons – Spring (Movement 1). This is a 20 minute mix of instrumentals perfect for the impending warm weather here in the northeast. Topping off the show is some sub heavy goodness off Workforce‘s debut album Apples and Sunshine. The beat is for the song “Maybe” and it was produced by the multi-talented Connecticut native, Cee Reed. Cee now fronts a hip-hop/rock fusion band called Total Dick, and you can catch them playing shows throughout the Tri-State area regularly. April 19th marks the passing of one of hip hops greatest lyricists, the man with the golden voice, Keith Elam aka Guru. This episode pays homage to this legend with a few lesser known joints from Gang Starr, produced of course by DJ Premier, a legend in his own right. These beats are some of my personal favorites that Guru blessed over the years, and my Gang Starr faithful know them well. First up is a joint off their last LP together, The Ownerz. It’s called “Zonin”, and I can’t count how many times I’ve actually zoned out to this one. Next up is “The Squeeze” which is from the Training Day Motion Picture Soundtrack. That release is one of the most amazing compilations of hip hop artists ever created for a movie, and included Pharoahe Monch, Roscoe, Xzibit, M.O.P, Krumbsnatcha and Cypress Hill among others. Taking us home is a real laid back beat from Preem for the song “Precisely The Right Rhymes” which is off their second LP Step In The Arena. This is the album that convinced me Guru is a great MC, and Gangstarr will be around for a very long time. I can associate many great memories of my younger years with this album. Gangstarr was simply part of my upbringing, and I went from a boy to a man with the voice of Keith E. E., Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal in my headphones more than any other artist. Next we go into a tightly woven, rocked-out smash from Classified. This is the beat for the lead single, “That Ain’t Classy”, for his new LP Handshakes and Middle Fingers, which is out now and a must have for your hip hop archives. We speed things up in this episode, first with some uptempo easy listening from Wilbe. The joint is called “Forever” and it’s part of Wilbe’s EP Melodic Instrumental Hip-Hop, a small collection of exceptionally crafted instrumentals. We keep the pace with the next track, produced by Elvin “Wit” Shahbazian. The track is “Too Classy” and the original song features the lyrical talents of Dre Murray. This is featured on their album Hells Paradise: Deluxe Edition. The instrumental and full version are both available via the link, at a name your own price deal. Lastly we slow it down with a beat called “Each Other”, produced by Short-E. This episode is a one-producer showcase featuring a budding beat-maker from California, Skribe1. The first time I heard his work many moons ago on MySpace, I thought to myself, this dude is a definite diamond in the ruff. Years later since then, Skribe has evidently chiseled the rock free of the grime and is ready for his time to shine as a premier producer in hip hop. He contributed two tracks on Pruven’s LP First Words: Earn Everything, and those tracks also featured Mr. Lif and L.I.F.E. Long. He’s currently working with Nasa at Uncommon Records, and he and myself are also working together. Here’s a new joint from KutMasta Kurt, fresh off the beat machine and into your ears. It’s called “Head Spins”, and it’s part of his forthcoming release Drum-Break Hip-Hop Vol. 1. So the new year is here and all that. Happy 2011! I took a short break to enjoy the holidays with the family and get my mind right. Of course I’ll never keep you waiting too long, without a dope beat to step to, so here we go. We’re taking it back like Zip and Jaz drives with the first banger. It’s Nasa and Agartha Audio with their track “Seers”. This is off Nasa’s new “name-your-price” release The Iomega Years, available now from Uncommon Records, and it’s packed with neck stomping madness. Next, we mellow out for a couple minutes with an 808-heavy jazz joint from The AmazNs, who hail from the Bronx. Moka Only sets off the session with a taste of the otherworldly yuletide spirit included in his latest release, Martian Xmas 2010. The first two beats you hear are “Emmex Seventro”, the introduction to the festive journey you will be taking upon listening to this album. The entire release is chock full of seasonal flavors seasoned by an extra-terrestrial artist. Next up is another banger from MagOwl. If you’ve been paying attention, then you know he has visited the playlist a bunch of times already. This time he delivers a funk rhythm called “Soul Sesame”, which is part of his new release Page One. It’s an album with a plethora of chopped up madness, synths and subs that are distinctively MagOwl made, but each one possessing a unique flavor, keeping the album interesting during every play-through. The Understudies spark up the latest episode of Beat Feed with their ridiculous groove “Pocket Swole”, which is pure ear candy. They pass it off to budding producer Freddie Finger, and his ambient cut “For You”, which is off his album Luminous. We set this episode off with brand new heat from ATL producer Floyd the Locsmif. This one is called “Flowtation Device”, and it’s the b-side to the new single “Talk About” which features J-Live. This next track is gonna strike that nostalgia nerve in my 90s hip hop heads. I pleasure of sharing the stage this past weekend with these two, who reunited for the first time in a long time. They are the Cella Dwellas, UG and Phantasm, and this beat is to their sub-level smash “Land Of the Lost” that the mighty Lord Digga produced for them way back in 1996. It was the lead single off their album Realms ‘n Reality. Wrapping it up is a beat from a series of releases that MF DOOM produced under the name Metal Fingers, and many consider this a classic series of hip hop instrumentals. Back to the one featured producer style of episode. This time around the spotlight is on CT emcee/producer, Sketch Tha Cataclysm. This Waterbury native has been putting in work underground for years now. Aside from producing for various artists, he’s an extremely gifted writer and always puts on an amazing live show, sometimes even rocking with a full band. The first beat is from The Protege (Phenetiks) EP, Untitled Is Hard Enough. Sketch produced the entire EP, and enough heads simply don’t know enough about this release. You need to check this ASAP. Next up is a joint he produced for the Rising Sun Quest‘s first official full length LP, Journey Towards the Sun. The track is called “Rock to the Rhythm” and there is a fly video for it you should peep here. This last track is off Sketch’s latest release The Sharing Is Caring EP, a project he did in collaboration with Deto 22 of Phenetiks. The beat is for their song “This Much Hip Hop” and it was the lead single off the release. Copperpot blasts us into orbit on the latest edition of Beat Feed, with an ambient sound-scape called, “Save Me”. This beat is part of the Coppershot release, which is a collab album he did with emcee Longshot. On this album Copper displays his wide array of production styles. In this single producer showcase, we feature an exceptional artist who’s no stranger to the feed, the mighty MagOwl. I’ve had the pleasure of being involved with two projects with him so far, Breez Evahflowin‘s Unearthed Past release and just recently Breez’s As He Goes On LP, and hope to collab with him more in the near future. He’s also a graph artist, painter and photographer, but of course we’re featuring MagOwl the musician, so lets get into the tracks featured here. In episode 52 we pay tribute to a producer who has proven over the recent years to be as creative and versitle as they come, Oddisee. This DMV artist has made everyone a believer, not only in his beat making prowess, but also his skills as a true MC. I honestly can’t count how many times I’ve promoted this man on both IndieFeed and here on Beat Feed, but that number will continue to rise regardless. He is deserving of all praise. Setting it off is a track off his Odd Autumn release, which is available for purchase with a “name your price” pricetag. The beat is called “Everyday People”, and it’s part of a twelve track release that is worth spending your money on. Starting price I believe is a buck for the entire release, but I would definitely consider giving more. In the middle of the set is a beat from a free release he just put out with Oliver Daysoul. The song is called “Just A Song” and it’s one of four fresh tracks available on Mr. Saint Louis. Each song is complimented by an acca version from Oliver and an instrumental from Oddisee, with one bonus track ft. Von Pea. This one person I told about my idea before it started, responded with “There are 100 wack beats for every 1 decent beat out there. You’re going to be looking for needles in haystacks.” My response naturally was, “Have you followed my singles show, IndieFeed Hip Hop? The man from NY, now stationed in Massachusetts, the backbone of Showoff Entertainment and Brick Records, has a new release coming out October 26th with partner Termanology. It’s called 1982, and this first track is the beat to their first single “You Should Go Home” ft. Bun B. and Masspike Miles. We begin the next wave of rhythms with a producer out of Cali, who’s been quietly banging out some heaters in his west coast studio. With the proper exposure, this man is destined for notoriety. His name is Freddie Joachim, and this track “Out of Season” is the first of five soulful joints on his new free EP Dust. Next up is a listener submission that had me grabbing a pen the minute I heard this track, titled “Whistle While You Work”. The Pennsylvanian producer’s name is Chris Leidy, and you can catch some of his handy work on his Youtube page. He sent me a handful of bangers, so be on the lookout. Last but certainly not least, is a bit of a throwback to my earlier years with IndieFeed. It’s “Standing Room Only” produced by Paten Locke, aka DJ Therapy. This is the bonus track on the debut album from the Jacksonville crew Asamov, And Now. The full song features appearances from Cassidy, J-Live and Wordsworth. Episode 41 is what I consider a rainy day episode. Ill beats that sound even better when you add a little overcast. First up is a crazy producer by the name of Abnormal, with a joint called “You’ll Never Know” off his instrumental release Corridors Of My Mind. This is a “name your price” release, but if you want my suggested retail price, this release is worth a few hunnit easy. Next on the forecast is a track called “Song Cry”, from the talented William Cooper, who’s worked with Kool G Rap, the Rza, and Nature to name a few. It’s off his release BP Presents: The Spill, which is a free download. That song is originally off William Cooper’s LP Beware of the Pale Horse, another dope release. Taking us home is the instrumental version to Ill Poetic‘s The World Is Ours LP. The beats were released this year, nearly 3 years after the critically acclaimed debut full length dropped, and again this release is completely free. “I think beat-making is really the study of every kind of music,” says Brian Lindgren, the artist known as Mux Mool, “Anyone who makes beats should be experimenting in other genres.” He does just that on his debut LP Skulltaste, an album that explores a variety of musical avenues. This track “Hog Knuckles” is an example of adding a dash of electronica to a heavy hip hop joint. They say follow your dreams and someday they will come true. That’s exactly what the creator of the second track did, and ended up producing Eminem and Lil Wayne‘s smash hit “Drop the World”. Chase N. Cashe is his name, and he just dropped his own instrumental mixtape today called Vintage. My selection off of this mixtape, which is a free download by the way, is the title track. First up is a man who definitely has the potential to be one of the most profound producers of his generation, Maleet formerly “Malito” has been involved in the hip-hop scene since 1994. Born on the Banks of the Hudson River in 1981, Maleet was marinated in a household rich with culture, and it shines through in his sound. This track is off that banging Many Moods of Maleet release, and it’s called “Come on Down”. Another reason to give this man a serious listen and track his progress. Second up is a man who is second to none. The living legend DJ Premier. This is the track he produced for that Nike Classic (Better Than I Ever Been) campaign, that featured Nas, Rakim and Kanye. The original track was produced by Rick Rubin, but it really didn’t match up to the aforementioned emcee’s over Premo’s signature sound. Ending the show is a beat by a Canei Finch, who’s produced for Maino and TI. First up is a beatmaker from Jacksonville you should all get familiar with if you haven’t already. His name is Batsauce, and he’s produced joints for Mr. Lif, Surreal, Lady Daisey and the Smile Rays to name a few. This is one of the slowest episodes you’ll hear on Beat Feed, around the 80 bpm mark, but it also happens to be one of the illest production wise. Setting it off is a track that was featured inspired by the movie Black Dynamite. It’s Buckshot and Sean Price with “Can’t Fight the Feelin”, and it was produced by the young legend 9th Wonder, this time partnering with Dan the Man. Following that lava rock is another heater from Substantial, “U Were There ft. JSoul”, which was produced by DMV beatsmith Joe D.. Closing it out is the God MC, Rakim, with the beat to his single “Holy Are You”, which he put out on Ra Records last year. The beat was produced by long time Rakim collaborator Nick Wiz, and it’s definitely one of his finer pieces. We set this episode of Beat Feed off with a producer who is quickly matching the prolific output of his brother Madlib, the one and only, Oh No. Although his sound is quite different from his brother’s, his beats are no less dope, as demonstrated here in Guilty Simpson‘s “Ode to the Ghetto”, which is the title track off his 2008 LP. A tough act to follow, but not if you are as capable as the one called Khrysis, from Hall of Justus. From Rapper Big Pooh‘s Sleepers LP, this is the beat for “Just Friends” a crazy joint I featured on IndieFeed a while back. Wrapping it up is the instrumental to another track on that same playlist. It’s “Little Young” from Masta Ace and Edo G, from their album Arts and Entertainment. The beat was produced by M-Phazes, an ill producer from Australia who’s been heard on many a hip hop release to date. This week’s episodes pay tribute to a producer who has put in a astonishing amount of work in the past decade, Panik of the Molemen. It’s hard to understand why this man is so under-rated, with the kind of heat he’s been pumping out of his Chi-town studio over the years. First up is a joint off the Sacrifice Instrumentals release, which is the lyric-free version of Longshot‘s album Sacrifice. It’s called “Never Go Slow” and it sounds like a high speed chase in an action flick. Following that is a beat called “A Love That’s Worth Having”, off Instrumental 8, which is a 35 track instrumental extravaganza produced entirely by Panik. After a much needed two week getaway, I’m back with a fresh new episode, and who better a producer to set off my return but me… Episode 28, which happens to be my favorite number, starts off with a beat I released during the 2008 election season, and Breez Evahflowin took it and quickly laid out some real powerful verses in support of a particular candidate. It spread like wildfire around the web, and we put it on our Troublemakers release Remixes, Releases, Robots!. The song was called “TM4O” and if you have half a brain you can figure out what that stands for. I’m not much into politics however, so no more politician endorsements from me ever again, and for good reason. Second up is a track I produced around the time one of my best friends, John “Stroe” Wilson died from brain cancer. I call it “Never Forget” and I recorded some verses for it and even recited the first one at his funeral in Negril Jamaica, but it was a personal tribute and at that time I was not willing to share outside of the immediate fam. It’s hard not to include a Jake One banger in every episode of Beat Feed. He set off the very first episode and will likely be around to close out the last. He’s that nice. He’s back in number 18 with a track off his LP White Van Music Instrumentals, and DOOM fans everywhere went bananas when they heard him on it. The track is entitled “Trap Door”, and it’s one of many incredible pieces off a soon to be classic release. Hard to follow, but this crew The Anonymous has provided such an assortment of crazy instrumentals, I’ve already showcased them 3 times in less than 20 episodes. The beat is called “Life on Earth” and it’s from their ZinnDeadly Instrumentals release. Wrapping it up is the homie Kero One with another jazzy Bay Area breez. We get “Nasty” from the jump this time around. That happens to be the title to the late great J Dilla produced beat for Phat Kat, and it’s the lead track off Phat Kat’s latest album Carte Blanche. Then the mood gets substantially less nasty and more melodic with “It’s You (I Think)” from Substantial‘s latest solo release Sacrifice. Another magnificent track produced by Kno. Ending the episode is the stank foot funky beat produced by Mr. Porter for Guilty Simpson. The song is called “Get B_tches”, and it’s off Guilty’s album Ode to the Ghetto. Setting off episode 16 is another Scienz of Life magestic throwback, “Metaphysics 2030″, off their release Project Overground: The Scienz Experiment. Following that is a back to back dose of budding Mello Music Group producer Apollo Brown, who just put out an ill compilation album called The Reset. These two beats, titled “Poverty’s Pair Of Dice” and “Born on Halloween” respectively, are off his Skilled Trade mixtape, which is available for free. What better way to follow up last episode’s all star instrumentals with another legend in the making, producer 9th Wonder. This one is from Skyzoo‘s, The Salvation album, and it’s called “Beautiful Decay”. If you haven’t heard the full song yet, go get it. Skyzoo owns this track. Second is the little known producer with a big sound, Maleet. You heard his track “Mr. Perfect” in an earlier episode of Beat Feed, and he’s got plenty where these came from, trust. This episode features his instrumental “Message to My Wife”, and it’s off his release The Many Moods of Maleet. Last but definitely not least is a beat from producer Kno, for the Cunninglynguists track “Yellow Lines” ft. Phonte and Witchdoctor. First up, one of the greatest producers in hip hop history, Pete Rock, blesses us with a track he unfortunately let Jim Jones and Max B. get on. It’s called “We Roll”, and its such a crazy beat, I really wished he used it on an instrumentals only release. The song was featured on Pete’s feature album NY’s Finest. What better to follow a legend with two, perhaps even three with Talib’s body of work. The next beat is for the song “Oh Really” ft. Talib Kweli and Geo of Blue Scholars, from Buckshot and KRS ONE off the Survival Skills album. One of the most anticipated, and amazing collab albums ever. We’ll end this episode with a producer who is no slouch himself, and has impressed me with consistent quality beat after beat, Statik Selektah. A true millennial great.
